Oxford Road, Manchester
The Manchester Academy is one of the city's largest and most frequently used gig venues, featuring bands from Marilyn Manson to Robbie Williams. It's also used for the cheesy 80s meatmarket, Club Trop, every Tuesday.
Head down Oxford Road from the city centre, to the Student's Union, then continue for about 40 feet. The Academy is on your right.
Behind Deansgate Station.
The Boardwalk is a cosy little venue. There's a bar there but last time I was there I found it horrendously expensive - a Snakebite & Black for the price I'd expect for a Pernod Diesel (yum!). The sound quality is pretty good.
From Oxford Road: Find the junction with Whitworth Street (2 blocks south of the Memorial Gardens, by Oxford Road station), and head down towards the Ritz, Lazerquest and the Hacienda, with the railway on your left. Keep going past the left-hand turn until you reach a large traffic junction close to the G-MEX, just past the Hacienda. Turn left under the railway viaduct and then immediately right. Go straight ahead, the Boardwalk is just on your right.
Oxford Road, Manchester
Located opposite the Whitworth Park Student Residence, just down from the Manchester Academy going away from the town centre, this pub is where we all meet up on Sundays for drinks and nattering (nettering?). Providing a wide array of wines, ales and meads alongside more conventional drinks, the Hogshead has very nice interior styling, plenty of wood accented with brick. They do a good array of pub food at the upstairs bar, which is non-smoking. A quiet family pub, occasionally invaded by black-clad freaks ;) .
Oxford Street, Manchester
There is a bar at the back of the Hop and Grape itself, great for mid-gig pints, but also the Serpent Bar below the venue on the second floor. The Serpent Bar is spacious and a good place to meet up with people or to retreat during shite support acts. Being a Student Union, all drinks are naturally at student prices. :-)
This popular gig venue is inside the Manchester Uni students union building - walk down Oxford Road past the precinct centre, away from the city centre, and it's on your right with a wide set of steps , just before the Academy.
Newton Street, Manchester
This venue is legendary for its gigs, having been the place where the nascent Stone Roses, and later Oasis, first peddled their generation-defining wares to the public. Rarely the scene of much gothly goings on, but sometimes a band of interest will show their faces...
From Piccadilly Station, go down the station approach and continue along the road parallel to the approach up into town. When you reach the corner of Piccadilly Gardens, take a right hand turn and the Roadhouse is on your right.

Yes, but it's pricey. However, it's cheaper before 10:30. Advice : pop into the Salisbury on your way there.
Jilly's has 3 rooms - the Main Room, the Underworld and the Fishbowl. The Main Room normally plays mainstream metal / rap / industrial, the likes of NIN, Manson, Prodigy, Coal Chamber etc.
On Thursdays and Saturdays, the Fishbowl plays 80s stuff and extra bits (often influenced by the MancGoffs... expect to hear Apoptygma Bezerk and Nekromantik on occasion), while on Fridays it's home of evil crap 80s metal. Thusrday's DJ is Malcolm who is a lovely bun bun.
The Underworld on Thursdays is an indie and ska-punk haven. On Friday it transforms under the guidance of Rich Dove and Mark Guy into a haven for both eclectic and classic goth and industrial; there's enough variation to please the most wide of tastes while simultaneously meeting the fixes of the various genre afficionados. Requests are taken well, as long as you f**king well dance to them!
All of the rooms have a decent PA, a bar and a large number of tables and benches for crashing purposes. Normally it is possible to conduct a conversation while off the dance floor. Attendence is good. The goth floor, because of its music policy, tends to remain mainly clear of Spooky Kids. However, it shuts early, at around 4am, on the Friday.
Whitworth Street West
To get to the Ritz, locate the junction of Whitworth Street and Oxford Road (2 blocks down from the Memorial Gardens, by Oxford Road station). Go down Whitworth Street West, away from the Theatre. The Ritz is on the right.
The Ritz is a large club just off Oxford Road. They run an industrial/alternative/rock night on Monday nights, which tends to be populated by the junior contingent of the Manchester metal crew. Not much goth here, but it's a passable and quite fun night out, and the Ritz has a funky, bouncy sprung dancefloor.
Wakefield Street, Oxford Road
The Salisbury is one of Manchester's nicer pubs. It's strictly non-studenty, and aimed at the metal / rock community and bikers. However, you do get a lot of goths in, which isn't surprising considering that it's only a minute or so's walk to Jilly's. It's not too big and can get crowded, but generally has a good atmosphere.
The bar staff are fairly friendly. There's a pool table and jukebox, and plenty of tables and chairs. In true rock fashion, the bog's always broken, but there is a perfectly servicable urinal.
Fairfield Street
The Star and Garter is a very cosy little pub tucked away in one of the quieter parts of town. It has a function room up top which is occasionally used for gigs. The beer is a little pricey, but the atmosphere is good. There is a strict no-flyering policy.
From Piccadilly Station, take the staircase by the main doors and turn left at the bottom and left again. Follow the road down to the crossroads and turn left onto Fairfield street. The Star and Garter is a short hike along on the right.
From Piccadilly Gardens walk towards the Station and continue down London Rd past the front of the Tram stop. Take the first left (Fairfield St/London Rd crossroads, the Bull-whatever-it's called is on the right hand far corner) and the Star and Garter is under the bridge a little further down on the right.
From the Apollo head into town along London Rd, under the Mancunian Way flyover and past the BT building on the right. Take the left JUST BEFORE the lights beyond the railway bridge (you can't turn right at the lights) and turn right, then right out onto Fairfield St then ahead under the bridge and the Star and Garter is on the right.
