Top 10
OK, so I was going to put a rant up about parental responsibility in the
Internet age in light of recent paedophile arrests here in the UK, but I can't be
bothered... instead, I shall show you my response to the suggestion that Alasdair
made on Sluts:
> List me a combination of 10 CDs, books, videos, DVDs
> computer games or toys that no-one should be without.
- Book: The Illuminatus Trilogy - great reading, will keep you
wondering for years.
- Book: HP Lovecraft: The Complete Works - OK, I've never seen a
Complete Works, but failing that Omnibus vol 3. would do. Great
reading, suitably scary, and it'll stimulate your imagination.
- Computer Game: Alpha Centauri (with Planetary Pack) - a
wonderfully engrossing strategy game, different every time you
play it, with funky AI and absorbing gameplay.
- CD: The Cure, "Wish" - my favorite Cure album, and one of my
favorite CDs of all time. I can never get bored of listening to
this.
- DVD: "Dogma" - not only a spankingly good film, but 100 minutes of
deleted footage, behind-the-scene interviews and all kinds of
other funky tron.
- CD: Godspeed You Black Emperor!, "F sharp, A sharp, Infinity" -
amazing, ambient, quasi-classical musical soundscapes from the
Canadian Nontet. Sublime.
- Book: Neal Stephenson, "Cryptonomicon" - funky, geeky, action-
packed, thoughtful... a book I can keep re-reading time and time
again.
- Computer Game: "Fallout". OK, so the sequel had the better
engine, but this turn-based post-holocaust RPG has amazing plot,
intricate gameplay, and will keep you going for hours. Listen to
(6) while playing.
- Computer Game: "SWAT 3". Some FPS action. Less frag-packed than the
likes of Quake, this is more a strategy game than a shooter. You
need to think, and be cautious. It's great fun to play.
- Book(s): The complete Ranma - Just fun!
I might do the rant thing tomorrow. You Have Been Warned.
